Indra Jatra one of the prominent festivals of the newars was celebrated for the first time with great gaiety and devotion in Gangtok, Sikkim on 22nd September 2010. The celebrations started with puja and offerings followed by the ceremonial "shagun". Thereafter a procession of a rath yatra with the living goddess' image was taken out. This was culminated with the typical newar bhoj. The morning programme was graced by the State Deputy Chairman State Planning Commission Shri Sanchaman Limboo along with the Sate HRDD Minister Shri N.K. Pradhan.
The evening programme showcased several newari dances and songs presented by sikkimese boys and girls. This programme was attended by the Chief Minister and his cabinet with other dignitaries from the state government. The morning procession was attended by 2000 plus newars who had assembled from all over the state. The programme was conducted by Sikkim Newa Guthi led by the newly elected President Shri Rohit Kumar Pradhan.
